Does The Joker DO IT with Harley Quinn?
In the superhero and supervillain world, love blossoms and grows wherever the writers and creators can add it to the story. It doesn't matter if the story takes place in outer space millions of miles away from Earth, underneath the Earth's waters in the very bottom of the Marianas Trench, or a parallel dimension not discovered by real-world scientists. If there is a way for two species to fall in love, writers will make them fall in love.
So it is no surprise that some of the worst antagonists and villains in comic book history have romances and relationships that span decades. Hey, everyone loves to love a bad boy or girl, right? Many villains and antagonists are much more nuanced and varied than the protagonists themselves.
The love story we will be focusing on today is the on and off again relationship between Harley Quinn and the Joker.
Ever since Harley Quinn debuted in the animated show "Batman: The Animated Series," Men and women have gone gaga for her and her personality and style. If you were born in the late 1980s and 1990s, it is difficult to remember a Batman Universe without Harley Quinn. She melds so well with the Joker and the DC Universe.
Now, practically everyone knows who Harley Quinn is, as the character has been in live-action movies whose net profit now equals hundreds of millions of dollars. Not only that, but she also now has dozens of comic book stories centered around her and her adventures, as well as many comic book storylines with her and her precious beloved pudding, the Joker.
The Joker and Harley Quinn are an extremely popular couple in the DC Universe. They are as popular as Wonder Woman and Superman or Batman and Catwoman.
Every great love story in the DC Universe and the world of comic books has a starting point. So, what was the starting point between Harley Quinn and the Joker, and how did they come to love each other? Do they have a sexual relationship? And does the Joker love Harley Quinn?
How did Harley Quinn fall for the Joker?
Originally, Harley Quinn was meant to be a one-time character in the anime show. However, the studio animating Batman the Animated Series received a lot of fan mail asking who she was and if she would be back.
After the season ended, orders came down from the show's executive producer to write her into a few more episodes. She then appeared in the next season, and the rest is history. We now have Harley Quinn as a permanent character and an important part of the Batman Universe and the City of Gotham.
So how did Harley Quinn become the Joker's lover in the first place?
Even in the first episode, Harley Quinn, who did not have a name during her debut episode, had a massive crush on her boss, the Joker. In the episode, Harley Quinn and the Joker share conversations and build a rapport between each other in a charismatic and close way as they terrorize Commissioner Gordon.
Did the Joker fall for her at the same time?
The writers of Batman, the Animated Series, knew what kind of person the Joker was, and they didn't feel like it would make sense for his character to actually fall in love with Harley Quinn.
The Joker is a master manipulator, and his only true love is causing chaos and wreaking havoc on Gotham. His second love is making Batman's life as hard as possible. So, it wouldn't make sense for the Joker to actually fall in romantic love with someone.
So, it would seem that the Joker keeps Harley Quinn around because she is loyal to him, loves him, does what he says, and is generally more capable than any of his other henchmen.
But that doesn't mean that the Joker has no romantic feelings for her whatsoever. In the original series where Harley Quinn debuts, it is clear that the Joker does have some kind of feelings for her.
But these moments are fleeting, and they usually are accompanied by a scene where he is yelling at Harley Quinn, or they are causing mass destruction together.
The Joker's lack of romantic love could be attributed to his fucked-up mental state. Because of what happened to him and how he became the Joker, which is still a mystery to most fans as there are several theories on how he went mad, he doesn't know how to process romantic love.
The only thing The Joker knows about love is that it makes people do whatever the other person wants them to do. Since Harley Quinn is absolutely crazy for him, he will continue to use her love to his advantage.
So, does the Joker have a sexual relationship with Harley Quinn?
Based on all of the adult innuendo in Batman the Animated Series, it does look like they have a sexual relationship that started long before Harley Quinn debuted in her first episode.
One of Harley Quinn's signature lines, Puddin', is a term of endearment for the Joker.
Beyond Batman the Animated Series, there are tons of comics and tv episodes where the two are shown together, and they are engaging in romantic behavior or at least romantic speech.
There are many more examples of Harley Quinn and the Joker's sexual relationship in the comic books. Many panels have them sleeping in bed together.
Some comics that did not get official DC endorsement but were created by official DC artists have Harley Quinn and Joker Having vigorous and wild sex with each other. Most of these comments are not suitable for teenagers under the age of 16.
Suicide Squad
In the 2018 movie Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn, who is played by Margot Robbie, has several scenes with the Joker, who is played by Jared Leto. The movie clearly shows that the romance between the two is unhealthy but is not going away anytime soon.
And even if the writers never actually wanted them to be together, viewers, artists, and fans of Harley Quinn and Joker have definitely taken it upon themselves to flesh out their romantic relationship.
If you were to visit any part of the internet that centers around fan art, art, and pictures, there will inevitably be a section set up just for Harley Quinn and Joker. This romantic pairing has many fans, even though they all know that the romance is toxic.
Does Harley Quinn have any other romantic entanglements?
A woman as wild as Harley Quinn's would not stick to just one lover for her entire life. She has to go out and spread her wings and legs. One of the most important romantic relationships, other than the Joker, is Poison Ivy. Another female DC/Batman villain, numerous comic books exist with Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn paired together.
In these stories, the pair embark on their own adventures or band together to wreak havoc on Gotham and face down the Batman. But if you look a bit deeper into these comics, you will see that Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy often sleep in the same bed and kiss each other.
Someone who did not pay too much attention to the panels where the two women stare lovingly into each other's eyes could say that they are just really close girlfriends but stating so would be erasing a major part of their relationship. To say that Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy are just really great friends would be LGBTQ erasure.
Creators of Batman comic lines and stories have said that Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy are romantically involved. Since their relationship is acknowledged by the creators of Batman, writers to craft stories from the city of Gotham, and DC comic book artists, then it is true, and no one can argue against it.
Harley Quinn and the Joker's daughter.
If you still doubt that the Joker and Harley Quinn have had sex, then evidence of their flesh-and-blood daughter should put any objections to rest. During a part of Harley's storyline, Harley Quinn has to go away for more than a year because she becomes pregnant with the Joker's child.
Because Harley knows how messed up The Joker is, she decides to leave without telling him and seek hiding so she can give birth to her daughter, Lucy, safely and with the Joker's knowledge.
As of 2021, it is still unclear if the Joker knows about Lucy, but Harley Quinn continues to keep her a secret in case the Joker loses his shit and tries to kidnap her. As of now, Lucy is about four years old and stays with Harley's sister.
Filthy Fan Art
No matter what kind of comic or animated TV show series you watch, there will be fanart about any of the characters. If the showrunners and comic book writers give even the slightest indication of romantic longing between two characters, fanart artists will be sure to draw as many dirty pictures as possible and filthy fan-made comics about the couple.
If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then you have no idea about rule 34. It is an internet rule, and the rule clearly states that if more than seven people are interested in a subject, there will be filthy art about it.
Ever since her creation, there have been dirty fan art drawings, and comics made about Harley Quinn, Harley Quinn and the Joker, Harley Quinn and darkling, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn all by herself.
If you were to look up the phrase Harley Quinn x Joker on Google, Tumblr, or deviantART, you would see thousands and thousands of artworks depicting the two together in G, PG, and NC-17 scenarios.
But beware of searching through dirty art sites. You will see pictures that you can never forget. If you were to go on any of these dirty fanart sites, you would expect to see regular sexual scenarios like two or three or five people engaging in multiple sexual acts, like oral sex, orgies, and vigorous penetrative sex.
But the world is a wild and weird place, and the art that we create reflects that world. What we are trying to say is that if you look at dirty fanart sites, be prepared to see kink art like lactation, overfeeding, masochism and dungeons, and furry art. Oh my God, there is so much furry art.
So, no matter what scenario you would like Harley Quinn and the Joker to play out in your dirty little mind, you can definitely find fanart that will electrify your private parts and satisfy your imagination.
However, you might want to stay away from the Batman X Joker fan art if you know what's good for you.
Conclusion
There are some people who truly believe that the Joker loves Harley Quinn, while others say that he's just using her just like he uses everyone else. No one, not even the comic book artist or DC themselves, knows about the sexual feelings of the Joker and how he regards romance in his life. The Joker is not a regular character like Batman or Darkwing. He's an enigma to himself and an agent of chaos. Some writers say that he can't control himself, so if he ever wanted to stop terrorizing Gotham, he can’t. Chaos is in his blood.
If the Joker truly does not care about Harley Quinn, then it is good that Harley Quinn has the beautiful Poison Ivy as a lover. Perhaps one day, when the Joker dies, Harley Quinn and poison ivy can be free to pursue their relationship together without interference.
Poison Ivy is the type of woman who truly cares about her lover, and she knows that Harley Quinn's obsession with a joker is not normal, but Harley cannot help herself. But Poison Ivy is doing her best to show Harley Quinn what a strong and healthy romantic and sexual relationship looks like. Let's just hope the Joker doesn't call Harley back to his side anytime soon.
